Camp Bay is situated on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, in the North Idaho Panhandle, a uniquely beautiful part of the world. Formed by glaciers during the ice age, it is also believed to lie in the path of the ancient Missoula Floods, a series of cataclysmic glacial lake outbursts that periodically swept across Washington, Oregon and Idaho. These and other powerful forces of nature shaped Camp Bay into the great wilderness area you see today, the same frontier that drew the Kalispel peoples who settled it centuries ago. Homesteaded in 1912, Camp Bay began as the largest privately owned property on Lake Pend Oreille. It was part of a great westward movement that began in the 19th century, “leaving the prairies [of the Middle West] for the woods and lakes of Idaho,” as one of the original family homesteaders, H. A. Van Schravendyk, wrote. He came to the area as many others did, to begin “a new century in a new dwelling place and with a new outlook on life.” Over one hundred years later, you now have the chance to follow in his footsteps.
